EMDR Therapy
What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy, commonly known as EMDR, is considered the ‘gold standard’ treatment for PTSD (recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and the World Health Organisation). It is an effective therapy for all ages and widely used in the NHS, private sector, and all around the world.
EMDR is quite different from many other approaches in psychotherapy, in that it involves accessing memories in a specific way, guided instructions, and bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements). The goal of EMDR is for distressing memories to gradually lose intensity to then become a memory which does not trigger overwhelming emotions or thoughts.
EMDR is an evidence-based therapy for PTSD but is also a powerful treatment for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, phobias, a personality disorder, OCD, or trauma symptoms.
